Life without Technology

Here is a digital field trip that I created for social studies.

Homeschooling

I am the mother of 4 wonderful children. Three of my children are dyslexic. All of their celebrations and struggles in education prompted me to return to school. I am graduating (Dec.17) from Texas A&M University with Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (PreK-6 Generalist). After this Christmas break, I will start homeschooling my 2 youngest children (ages 7 & 9). I am very excited to begin this new chapter.

I am not really sure what I am going to do with this blog; but, it is my goal to share resources that I create and find. I also hope to share some of my boys creations and learning projects.

My thoughts on teaching

The ultimate goal of teaching is developing students who know how to learn. Doing this allows children to grow into adults who know how to teach themselves. In this way, teachers educate students to become successful life-long learners. It is imperative to simultaneously have high expectations, set boundaries, and to promote self-sufficiency.

I believe that it is my responsibility as a teacher (and especially a Mother) to aid in the development of each child's cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth through hands-on, active exploration, experimentation, and creative expression. All people are creative but creativity must be fostered and allowed to bloom in its own way. Creative expression can come in many forms other than just visual art. It is important to allow expression through movement, music, story, dance, drama, ideas, writing and much more. Play is a main ingredient in creativity. Being playful as a teacher and encouraging playfulness is critical in learning. I believe creative self-expression increases children’s self-esteem and well being throughout their lives. The creative process should be stressed more than the creative product. This will significantly promote children’s creativity. Alternately, focusing on the creative product can extinguish a child’s creativity which can diminish self. Creative expression makes learning in the content areas of reading, math, science, and social studies meaningful and joyful for children. I believe that demonstrating respect for all other persons as individuals, cultures and ethnic diversity also allows students for unique exposure to others.
